Look, Critics’ Choice Television Awards, you made some great choices, and I’mma talk about the rest of the nominations, but Nick Offerman is one of the best comedy actors of all time! Now that I’ve gotten that requisite award show joke out of the way, we can talk about the newly announced 3rd Annual Critics’ Choice Television Awards nominations. I’m so used to reading through TV award nominations and continuously groaning over all the underrated people who were left off the list. With these nominees, I only groaned a couple of times, which was really weird for me. In fact, I spent a lot more time being excited about the underappreciated names that popped up. Except we need to talk about Nick Offerman’s absence.
But first, the good news. Just look at some of these categories and the pleasantly surprising names they contain.
BEST COMEDY SERIES
The Big Bang Theory
Parks and Recreation
Parks and Rec was snubbed at last year’s Emmys, and we’ve already established it’s basically the best show on TV, so this is some nice revenge. It’s also great to see The Middle getting some attention. It’s actually a great take on the family sitcom.
BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Don Cheadle (House of Lies)
Louis C.K. (Louie)
Jake Johnson (New Girl)
Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation)
Jeremy Sisto (Suburgatory)
Hurray for Jake Johnson! He’s really shaped Nick Miller into a funny and interesting character this season. Plus, who doesn’t love Adam Scott?
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Carly Chaikin (Suburgatory)
Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory)
Sarah Hyland (Modern Family)
Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory)
Eden Sher (The Middle)
Casey Wilson (Happy Endings)
So many great nominations for young actresses here! I don’t watch Suburgatory on the regular, but Carly Chaikin’s Dalia is one of the highlights. Same with Sarah Hyland. The adult cast of that show dominates the awards show, but the kids are also really impressive. Oh, and Sue Heck is one of my favorite TV characters, so you go, Eden Sher! Plus, always nice to see some Happy Endings love, especially after the show was axed.
I’ve saved this category for last:
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Max Greenfield (New Girl)
Simon Helberg (The Big Bang Theory)
Alex Karpovsky (Girls)
Adam Pally (Happy Endings)
Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation)
Danny Pudi (Community)
Hurray for Happy Endings! I always like to see some Community and Parks and Rec love, so yay to that, but I actually think if anyone from Community is going to get a nod it should be Alison Brie. And excuuuuse me, where is Nick Offerman?! He still hasn’t been nominated for an Emmy or a Golden Globe or pretty much anything, and I just don’t get it. He’s arguably the funniest person on Parks and Rec, and that character has become so iconic in just a few years thanks to his performance. I’ll pick Nick Offerman over Chris Pratt any day. No offense to Andy Dwyer, but I respond so much more to Ron Swanson. I thought for sure an awards show like this, which already chose to many underrated actors and shows, would give some love to Mr. Offerman. Let’s make it happen, awards people!
Other exciting nominees include the fabulous American Horror Story ladies (Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe) and Andrew Lincoln from The Walking Dead. He deserves an award just for making me believe he’s a southern sheriff and not the British Love Actually cast member that he is.
