In the crazy, crazy town called Hollywood, where every move a star makes is followed, from walking the red carpet to buying toilet paper, those same stars have to constantly be on alert about what the paparazzi catch on their fancy photograph machines. (I’ve heard they’re called cameras.) Beyonce is all, “You don’t take unflattering pictures of Queen Bey!” And now Mindy Kaling is all, “You won’t catch me drinking alcohol and then use that picture when you talk about my possible future DUI.” Because she is prepared to make any future crimes she may commit look not as bad. And celebrities can learn from her.
Mindy stopped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, where she revealed that her BFF B.J. Novak gave her some sound advice about being photographed at fancy events. Namely, don’t be photographed with an alcoholic drink in your hand. Yep, it turns out the same rules that apply to college freshmen taking cell phone photos of each other at parties also apply to celebrities at black-tie affairs. Except instead of preventing a potential employer from seeing you on Facebook giving a sloppy peace sign with a red plastic cup in your hand, celebrities are just taking precautions in case they ever get a DUI. Because you know those tricksy gossip magazines will publish a photo of the star drinking and say, “Look guys! It’s a problem!”
It might also be a good idea to just try not to get a DUI in the first place, but B.J. and Mindy have a pretty good point. What kind of photos would they print of you that you would be embarrassed about if you made the news? If you’re a celebrity, there are a bazillion more embarrassing photos for the press to choose from, so you gotta take the precautions before something bad happens. In Mindy’s case, she’s also worried that if she murders someone, the gossip rags with publish a picture of her with with knives or swastikas all around her. I would certainly hope that A.) she would try her hardest not to kill someone, and B.) she wouldn’t be in the type of situation where there are knives or swastikas surrounding her. Jimmy has my same concern in the video. But you know what, better safe than sorry, especially when you’re a celebrity.
