So last night Candice Glover won the 12th season of American Idol. Which not only ensures her at least 24 full hours of fame, but also the knowledge that she’s now going to be the answer to a trivia question at a bar night approximately 13 years from now. You know, when the American Idol judges get completely replaced by robots, Madame Tussaud’s wax statues and a dancing dog who made it to the final rounds of America’s Got Talent.
As irrelevant as the show feels now that we’re in 2013, it still manages to find amazing talent almost every year. Such as this year with Candice Glover. Even though I didn’t watch this season closely, it became clear very early that she would make it to the top. Sure things always happen along the way (like somehow Jennifer Hudson getting voted off before Justin Guarini), but she seemed destined to be standing on that stage at the very end. So it’s no surprise that she got to take home the prize last night. There’s a prize right? Some kind of trophy? A crown? A certificate? A note to your employers explaining where you’ve been? I’d like to think something tangible.
Before they (officially) announced that Candice won, they brought Jennifer Hudson back to do a duet with her. Obviously they killed it. Just straight up murdered the song, “Inseparable.” (And this is the ONE context where murder’s a good thing.) Even if you haven’t watched one episode all season, even if you haven’t watched an episode ever, you should watch this duet. It’s just two talented people getting out on stage and singing a song together.
