This episode of How I Met Your Mother brought about some interesting changes for Marshall, Lily, and the rest of the gang. That’s not to say I was particularly enthused with last night’s episode because I was not. It made me surprised/nervous/sad. I just have a lot of feelings, okay?!
The first surprise of the night came when The Captain offered Lily a chance to relocate to Rome. She’d still be under his employ as an art consultant, and Marshall and Marvin would obviously come too. I sat in front of my television thinking that this whole storyline was a waste of time. There’s no way they’re ever going to have two of the main characters move to Rome. So I’ll admit that I was happy to see this show can still surprise me. I’m not really sure how they can make this work, but I’m interested in finding out.
Maybe Lily and Marshall moving to Rome is exactly what they need to get out of the rut I feel like they’ve been in forever. Also, I find it hilarious that whenever Lily talks to The Captain he makes her speak in ridiculous sailing metaphors. So that may have something to do with it.
I did not find it hilarious when Ted and Barney had that tense discussion about Robin at the bar. Ted doesn’t think that Barney has been acting like someone who’s engaged, and I have to say I agree. The two of them spend the entire episode waiting for the hot girl from Ted’s yoga class, who also happens to be Barney’s wedding planner, to take off her parka so they can ogle her “redonkulous” body. Robin acts like she’s cool with it, but I’m not convinced this isn’t foreshadowing a bigger problem.
I feel like they’ve been dropping not so subtle hints that this wedding might not happen for a while now. Barney and Robin seemed to be in a good place at the end of the episode, and it’s true that being in a committed relationship doesn’t make you blind. Regardless, I still can’t shake the feeling that this is just the calm before the storm.
