With May 26th quickly approaching, the fateful date that the new Arrested Development episodes will be released, I’m at a point where I’ll click on anything that even approximates an update. (Um, did you see the posters!) It’s just that I’ve been on the edge of my seat about this new season since late last year, and my butt is starting to go numb with excitement and anticipation, so I will quite literally take what I can get. But — good news! — some of these quotes from Tony Hale, who plays Buster, are actually very informative, and as an added bonus, it sounds like he’s just as excited about seeing the new episodes as we are. (And only slightly more informed, which is cute.) When asked how it felt to return to being an active, neurotic member of the Bluth Family:
“This whole thing was very surreal. It’s like being in a time warp. It was even weird coming back to Buster.”
But, but why, Tony Hale??
“Just because in your mind you’re thinking it’s been years. People have an idea of Buster, and you think, ‘Can I match that expectation?’ I will say once I heard [Lucille Bluth actress] Jessica Walter‘s abusive, demeaning voice, it just all clicked in. It was like flipping this immediate switch.”
He also talks about what it was like during the original filming process, hearing about all the insane new plot points Mitch Hurwitz had cooked up:
“I remember when they’d come up to me, like, ‘By the way, Liza Minelli’s going to be your girlfriend.’ ‘A seal’s gonna bite off your hand.’ ‘You’re going to go into the army.’ Like, what? To be honest, while we were shooting this new season, I’d be reading the scripts like, ‘I have no idea how this is all going to mesh together. I know Mitch has this big plan all in his head. I can’t wait to see it put together.”
That. Makes. Two of us. May 26th can’t come quickly enough, when all fifteen episodes get released together. But this interview is apparently the first Tony’s hearing of that release strategy:
“Is that what they’re doing? I hadn’t heard that. Oh man, I haven’t even thought about it! I think Jason [Bateman] said it’s all like a big puzzle? I don’t know man, it’s all a mystery to me.”
It’s just that I’m so psyched.
