I don’t know what to do with this new Ke$ha interview. The pop star appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night to promote her new MTV reality show My Crazy Beautiful Life. And I’m finally starting the understand the show’s title. Because the things that come out of Ke$ha’s mouth in this interview are just about as crazy as you’d expect from her. But her appearance and way of speaking are beautiful. She looks the cleanest I’ve ever seen her, and she keeps her beloved glitter restricted to her stylish short suit. It’s like her evil twin Kesha, without the $, showed up to ruin her reputation.
I’ll set up some of the strange juxtapositions for you, but you really have to watch the interview yourself to fully experience what I’m trying to get across. First of all, Jimmy introduces her as someone could have attended an Ivy League school but chose to be a pop star instead. I already knew this about Ke$ha, but hearing it now just emphasizes how clean and normal she looks when she comes out. Then Ke$ha talks about how she used to bathe in beer and roll around in glitter when she was younger, but she had to stop because it gave her a rash. If I read this quote from her in a magazine, I’d probably think, “Oh, Ke$ha, you so crazy!” But watching her say it, I think, “That sounds like an interesting idea, Ke$ha, but that was very responsible of you to stop once your health was compromised.” What is happening?
And then Jimmy asks if she gets the glitter in weird places, and she says she and the people on tour with her compare stories… and then she stops talking because she’s not sure she can say what she wants to say on television. And that’s the end of it. This is a woman who sings about brushing her teeth with a bottle of Jack and made out with a unicorn in one of her videos! But she doesn’t want to inconvenience the censors by saying something inappropriate.
And then in the second part of the interview she talks about how her mom helped her write songs about stalking guys or dismembering and eating them, and I somehow thought, “Oh, that’s really nice that she has such a good relationship with her mother. How sweet.” If she were speaking a foreign language in this interview, I’d think she was one of the most normal celebrities out there. I’m even starting to reconsider my initial thoughts on eyeball sex.
