Scarlett Johansson Earns My Grudging Respect For The Way She Talks About Ryan Reynolds

Scarlett Johansson at opening night party for Cat On A Hot Tin Roof January 2013I’ve never been particularly drawn to Scarlett Johansson on a personality level. (Which is a perfectly normal thing to say about a beautiful, talented, successful woman whom I’ve never met, so get over it.) I’m jealous of her appearance and her body and her career, but I’ve never caught myself saying, “Yeah yeah, Scarlett, I think I like the way you talk to people. Come do that over here.” I know she was married to Ryan Reynolds for a hot minute, and now he’s not, because he’s married to that other girl whom he loves about 1.7 million times more, and whom I’m also jealous of. But I’ve never heard Scarlett talk about her relationship with Ryan, and it turns out that’s because she doesn’t. Like ever. And that gives me a certain grudging respect for her, which is only intensified by the vague answers she gave Marie Claire in a recent interview when they asked her about her divorce:

“Well, it wasn’t that long ago. But I think I’ve had a fair amount of time to process the experience and be able to move forward…I continue to get to know myself better as I get older. And that helps me in my relationships.”

Wow. Gotta give you props for still not saying anything catty about a failed relationship, even years later. Super mature to just relate it to yourself and the ongoing learning experience that we’re all engaged in. Respect. She then quickly moves the topic on to what she does and doesn’t care for in a guy:

“I don’t like jealous behavior. I don’t mind an occasional check-in, but when somebody is passive-aggressively jealous, it’s really unattractive because it shows a sort of insecurity. Oh, controlling behavior is awful. Nobody’s going to say they love that.”

I just feel like there were a lot of opportunities for her to make a passive aggressive comment about Ryan, or any of the other guys she’s dated since then, and she skipped by them all. It’s a little thing, but it means a lot. Although obvi you’re wrong about that controlling behavior thing. There’s nothing I love more than a man who schedules my play dates for me and packs me little snackies in my lunch bag. SO ROMANTIC.
