The Pitch Perfect Cast Will Open The MTV Movie Awards, And It’ll Be Aca-Awesome

Pitch Perfect Rebel Wilson

If you’re like me, last fall you quickly became a fan of Pitch Perfect, the a cappella comedy that made us all realize we should be girl-crushing on Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson. Like, ASAP. When I saw it, my first thought was that it had the potential to be the next Mean Girls, not that any movie could fully replace that classic in my heart.

Since Rebel Wilson herself is hosting the upcoming MTV Movie Awards, there were whispers that the Pitch Perfect cast would have some kind of reunion (if you can call it that after a few months) during the show. Well, now it’s official. Not only will the Barden Bellas and the Treblemakers perform during the awards; they’re opening the show with a brand new musical mashup and it’s going to be so so great. The above GIF illustrates my excitement. It’s going to be the cast’s first ever live musical performance. Participating cast members are: Skylar Astin, Anna Camp, Esther Dean, Adam DeVine, Alexis Knapp, Hana Mae Lee, Ben Platt, Brittany Snow and Rebel Wilson.

If you’re desperately scanning that list of names for Anna Kendrick (who I was hoping would perform her “Cups” trick), unfortunately you’re in for a disappointment. Anna won’t be there, due to scheduling conflicts. She’ll be in New York that day filming the movie The Last Five Years (another musical). I would prefer it if they could somehow place her on the stage as a singing hologram, but I guess that’s asking too much.

The Movie Awards already look to be all about the a cappella this year. In addition to Rebel hosting and the cast performing, the movie’s also nominated for four awards this year: Best Female Performance for Rebel Wilson, Best Breakthrough Performance for Rebel Wilson again, Best Musical Moment and Best WTF Moment. Rebel playing double duty as host and nominee makes me think of two things: James Franco hosting the Oscars and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the Golden Globes. But something tells me Rebel will go the Tina and Amy route with her hosting behavior.

I’m hoping this performance involves an empty swimming pool for the groups to sing in onstage. But, you know, I’m not that picky. I just want to see them sing.

The MTV Movie Awards are on April 14th at 9 PM ET. On MTV. Because if they were on a different channel that would be weird.
