A lot of people cover songs on YouTube and because so many people do this, a good portion of them end up being… not so great. An exception to that trend is B. Smyth, an up-and-coming R&B singer who we’re giving you the chance to chat with him tomorrow, Thursday April 4th at 3 PM EST.
The nineteen-year-old got his start posting YouTube videos of himself covering songs by Michael Jackson, Trey Songz, and Cee Lo Green to name a few. He knew he wanted to pursue a music career and used what he had to his advantage: a camera, the internet, and his voice. He started posting videos two years ago with a goal of posting one video each week. I have a lot of respect for someone who goes out there and makes things happen and B. Smyth is definitely an example of this. Over time his covers gained popularity and record labels began contacting him. These days, he’s signed to Motown Records, recently appeared on BET‘s 106 and Park and just released his first single “Leggo” featuring 2 Chainz.
B. Smyth may sound like a mysterious name, but the guy himself seems really down to earth. On his YouTube channel you can watch webisodes that show him working at a toy drive for kids (aw!) and racing go-karts with friends (awesome!). You can also see his amazing dance moves that prove the comparisons to Usher he’s been receiving are about more than just his voice. Oh, and did I mention he also writes songs? He tried for one per week when he was starting out!
If you want to know more about B. Smyth, ask him yourself! Join our live Facebook interview tomorrow and you’ll get the chance to ask B. Smyth your questions! Wanna know how he got to be such an amazing dancer? When he realized he was a talented singer? How it felt to go from YouTube to a music video with 2 Chainz?
