In news that’s actually refreshing to read, Glee star Cory Monteith checked himself into rehab for substance addiction. Obviously it’s the fact that he checked himself into rehab — and not the substance addiction — that’s refreshing to hear about. In this day and age of celebrities getting court ordered to help themselves, it’s nice to know that some celebrities are still able to make that incredibly hard decision on their own. Especially celebrities like Monteith who are followed closely enough by young fans that they’re actually able to influence their decisions. Hopefully his responsible choice to seek out help will resonate with his fans as they come to points in their own lives where they might need the same.
His rep released a statement to People late last night that asked for everyone’s respect and privacy as Cory began his recovery. Then, even later last night, his real life girlfriend and Glee co-star Lea Michele followed suit with a statement letting us all know that she’s proud of his decision.
Even though Cory Monteith plays the incredibly clean-cut Finn on Glee, he’s apparently battled with substance addiction problems in his past. New York Daily News reports that he once said that he took “anything and everything,” which him to enter rehab 11 years ago at the age of 19. While actors are obviously capable of playing characters other than themselves (in fact, I think that’s the definition of acting), it’s hard to imagine Finn in rehab. But that’s why I have to constantly remind myself that actors and the characters they play are two different people.
Hopefully he’s able to make a full recovery in rehab this time. As someone who used to obsess over Glee, I wish him all the best.
