You may not know who Nikki Williams is yet, but you will soon. We’re predicting that the 24-year-old singer’s new single “Glowing” is going to be all over the place. It’s just that catchy — one listen and we promise that you’re hooked. And unlike some catchy pop songs, she can actually sing . In fact, her voice is so good that PopDust described as “one part Kelly Clarkson, one part Hayley Williams” plus some Lana del Rey thrown in there. The video for “Glowing,” the first single from her currently untitled album, debuts Monday, but you can watch the teaser trailer below.
Looks like fun, right?
Nikki’s other currently released song is called “Kill, Fuck, Marry” and it’s just as intense as the titles implies. (And the video lives up to it. Guns! Making-out! Passionate stares into the rain!) Nikki’s song are definitely pop, but also rock-ish and country-ish and ballad-ish. How did her music end up that way? We rounded up four facts about Nikki that answer this question and more about this new force in pop music. But we can’t tell you everything, some questions have to be answered by Nikki herself, and you get the chance to ask her whatever you want this Monday on our live Facebook interview (details below)!
1. She’s Originally From South Africa
Nikki was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and lived there until she moved to Nashville with her family at age 16. In Nashville she had to get used to both the “size of the fast food portions to the fact that people didn’t understand what [she] was saying.”
2. She Wrote a Song For Country Strong
Nikki wrote a song, “Fly Away” for Country Strong starring Gywneth Paltrow. She’d started writing country music while in high school, but when she was offered deals with record producers in Nashville she simply told them she never set out to be a country singer.
3. She Wrote “Heart Attack”
I think it’s pretty obvious how we feel about “Heart Attack” by Demi Lovato over here. It’s super catchy like one of Nikki’s songs, because it is one of Nikki’s songs. She wrote “Heart Attack” for Demi Lovato in addition to writing her own songs.
4. She Was Discovered Outside of a Bathroom
Or, rediscovered I should say. Nikki moved to Los Angeles at 21 after she’d already become successful as a country music writer. One night at a club she was singing in the restroom (I don’t know why. This would be a great question to ask!) and a producer overheard her strong voice. He waited outside the bathroom until she came out and this meeting lead to what her career has become today.
If you want to know more about Nikki Williams– Why didn’t she keep “Heart Attack” for herself? How did she feel hearing a song she wrote used in a movie? Why was she singing in a club bathroom? (Seriously, I think that’s a good one!)– then be sure to join our Facebook live interview on Monday, March 25 at 4pm EST. Here’s how:
