Thank God Emma Watson Isn’t Going To Be In Fifty Shades Of Grey Because I Couldn’t Handle It

It’s not because she’s Hermione Granger, or because I want her to be my best friend, or because Fifty Shades of Grey is undoubtedly a terrible book that I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve read.  I couldn’t handle Emma Watson playing Anastasia Steele because while I believe the screenplay has to be written better than the novel, I don’t want to see her in that role because I think it’s beneath her.  It’s the kind of thing that can (unfortunately) pigeon-hole an actress and label her negatively for a long time.

Emma took to Twitter early this morning to put the Anastasia Steele speculation to rest:

Emma Watson 50 Shades of Grey

I’ll see the movie. I won’t pretend paying $10 to see it is beneath me, because very few things are.  I would just rather watch an “undiscovered ingenue” in this role because when she doesn’t get taken seriously for the remainder of her career she’ll at least have had one hit movie or possible franchise under her belt.  Let’s be honest — the guy who gets cast as Christian Grey won’t face this problem because our culture celebrates guys when it comes to sex, and still shames girls when it comes to sex.

Although I would be remiss in my duties here if I didn’t acknowledge that Brooke Shields‘ career skyrocketed after Blue Lagoon (not entirely comparable to 50 Shades but she did have a breast double show her boobies, and there was a touch of incest on that island) and the curly blonde actor she starred with went pretty much nowhere. So there’s that.

Regardless of who’s cast in the coveted roles, I think we can all agree that we’re going to be speculating about it for a LONG time so we might as well have a little fun with our predictions.  Anyone?
