I was nervous that little-known actress and indie film darling Emma Stone would never make it in the big leagues because of her raspy man voice and tendency toward gangling around like a human cartoon, but it sounds like I needn’t have worried. You probably haven’t heard of Emma, because up until now she’s only done dinky little community theater projects like Gangster Squad, The Amazing Spider Man, and Crazy Stupid Love, the first and last of them with a similarly underrated and unknown actor named Ryan Gosling. Because she’s funny and quirky, Emma can obviously never be truly successful, but sometimes she does get somewhat larger projects like this public-access channel kids’ show she’s been working on called The Croods. It’s real low-budget, just sock puppets and voices behind a shoe box, but Emma seems to like it. And it seems like her imminently uncastable voice and personality are starting to almost maybe pay off:
“The recording was really fun – they have this little camera filming you, and they animate the character according to your movements, so you can really go for it and be a human cartoon. I’ve been a human cartoon since I was born anyway so I might as well animate it. My husky Emma Stone trademark voice remains too. My natural man voice has finally worked for me!”
