Anderson Cooper Is Team Anne Hathaway, Indirectly Dissed Jennifer Lawrence So Now We Can’t Be Friends

2013 Vanity Fair Oscar Party

Anderson Cooper is by far my favorite silver fox on cable television news.  I absolutely adore him and nothing will ever change that.  But I must admit his recent, vehement defense of Anne Hathaway has left a bad taste in my mouth.  I don’t know if it’s because I hate disagreeing with my main S.F. or because I’m now confused about gay men and what celebrities they hate, but it was all fun and games until he indirectly dissed Jennifer Lawrence:

“Your bitterness over Anne Hathaway makes no sense and is completely irrational and you’re like, ‘Oh that other actress fell and she’s so sweet.’ You don’t think that fall was rehearsed?”

While that last part was a joke, I wanted to give Anderson a big “Oh HELL naw” when he brought up everyone’s favorite person in the entire world in a negative way.  I don’t know what happened to Anne Hathaway’s appeal since The Princess Diaries and Rachel Getting Married, but I think it has something to do with her recent attendance at the Taylor Swift Academy Of Fake Insincerity And Guffaw-Golly-Gee, where she apparently majored in wide-eyed lash-batting and adorable gratitude.

Props to Anderson for defending his beliefs in a meaningless debate, he brought up valid points. She’s really not completely insufferable or terrible. But comparing her to Jennifer Lawrence? Bitch, please.  (I still love you infinite amounts though.)

Seriously, you people need to give this a rest. Hating on Anne Hathaway only makes you ook catty and just plain bitchy, this isn’t mean girls. When someone you don’t like achieves something, you don’t have to be happy, just don’t respond. It’s not that big of a deal. What I do not understand, is why people seem to hate Hathaway even more, simply because she is not Jennifer Lawrence and any comparison, however harmless, draws complete ire. Why are they presented as polar opposites on the “likability of Hollywood women” scale?

Also, people need to calm the hell down about Jennifer Lawrence. I get it she’s relateable and seems cool, but the ardent defense and complete fangirling over her just comes off as desperately weird. You don’t know her any better than you do Anne Hathaway. It would seem that people have created a “meaningless debate” over the idea of the two women rather than the truth. It does, however, shed a blinding light on the bizarre phenomenon of female generated sexism.

So I can’t find someone annoying and be a feminist at the same time? How open-minded of you.

    • yoyolanda

To be fair, you did needlessly put them in competition with one another. I think that’s the point. Not you finding anne annoying.

They’re not in competition. I find one of them to be more genuine and down-to-earth and the other one used to be and now she irritates me. Anderson Cooper put them in competition here by comparing them. Because they’re both young, good-looking, talented women who were both nominated for Oscars this year. Of course they’re lumped together for comparisons.

I find Jennifer Lawerence annoying and desperate to always trying to look “cool” by saying shocking and outrageous stuff. She is desperate for attention and it’s not cute or cool to act like annoying butt hole all the time. This girl seems like she will do a lot of stuff for attention.

Feminism is about supporting each other as women instead of perpetuating the myth that women are only acceptable if they dress, act, look, behave in a specific way. So no, you cannot be a feminist and mindlessly hate on a woman who is only doing her job the same way male actors do. Do you hate Hugh Jackman for constantly being chipper, gentlemanly, uber-friendly, impeccably dressed, overly rehearsed in pretty much every interview he gives? Somehow, I doubt it, so fuck off.

    • Jules

@Trish….right, except that Jackman has the reputation for being a sweetheart on and off the set….easy going while remaining professional, whereas Hathaway is a perfectionist to the point of being difficult, too high strung. I think Hathaway needs to lie low for a while, stop apologizing for everything ie., the dress and relax. Stop trying to please EVERYONE. Oh, in the spirit of feminism, how about we support Cassandra’s right to also have an opinion without suggesting that she “fuck off”. Try to remain civil.

Jennifer Lawerence is being a A hole to everyone she works with even Josh Hutcherson who is known to be a very nice guy. If that not being a diva then I don’t now what is because that is even worse treating people bad then asking for certain things.

I’m allowed to not like an actress and not have it be my Attack On All Women By Women. There are plenty of make actors I don’t like. Does that make me more or less of a feminist? Nope.

  • jenley2013

You have to be a real idiot to believe Jennifer had planned this fall. Why on earth would someone want to humilate herself on purpose in the biggest night of her life with millions watching worldwide, knowing full well this is all everybody will be talking about!?

    • Mia003

To get attention. They were talking about her for weeks. She fell up stairs in slow motion. Come on it was so fake. As fake as her wardrobe malfunction but whatever to keep the attention you right.

    • Jules

Right, because Jennifer Lawrence really needs the attention…you have to be kidding me. Seriously, just think, logically, about that for a moment….it doesn’t even merit discussion. Cassandra was rightfully pointing out that Cooper’s strategy of defending one actress by dissing another was wrong.

    • jenley2013

Like you said, they were talking about her for weeks. And she JUST won an Oscar – do you really think anyone was worried about her NOT getting attention???
Also, there was no dress “malfunction”, there was getting her dress caught in a chair and the lining being revealed for a few seconds. Get over yourself.

    • Mia003

She knows that if she trips everyone will feel sorry for her and it will put most of the spotlight on her and she would have two hot men running to help her. She knows how to play the game. They talked about it for weeks like it was the biggest thing to happen so she got most of the attention at the oscars for that. I guess she wants most of the attention on her at all times.
She does a lot of attention seeking stuff like saying outrages stuff, sticking her middle finger up, cussing, talking crap ect… I guess you also think that she accidentally stuck her middle finger up at the oscars? Did you see her face trying to act like it was an accident and her dress all of a sudden falling half way down yeah right.

    • Whateffs

“It will put most of the spotlight on her…” Um, darling, she just won the most coveted award of the year for an actress in a leading role at an age where other actresses are still waitressing their way to Hollywood, apart from the fact that she is the lead in one of the most successful movie franchises ever, so really, she did not need any more attention.

    • Jen90

So because she won a oscar means she can’t be an attention whore?

  • Mierzwiak

I LOVE Anne Hathaway, and I LOVE Jennifer Lawrence. Am I weird?

    • http://twitter.com/cassyhough Cassandra Hough

Not at all. In fact, you win! The thing is, I loved Anne Hathaway before Les Mis. Then I didn’t. Shit happens.

    • Trish

No, you are an exceptionally smart human – smart enough not to fall for media bullshit. Congrats!
