In tragic news that I’m sure you’re all aware of by now, Michelle Williams and Jason Segel have broken up. I personally was comfortable assuming that this was all a tragic misunderstanding and the two of them never meant to break-up at all; I was imagining the press intercepting a confusing bear-o-gram sent from one to the other that originally said “I can’t live without you” and then somehow got switched or smudged or torn in a way to make it look like it said “We are broken up now”. What a cute and quirky mistake for us to make! How silly we are! But sadly it appears that this was actually an intentional breakup, and even worse, it People is reporting that there was an actual reason behind it. According to them, Michelle broke up with Jason because she couldn’t see being with him long-term:
“She cares a great deal for Jason but is not ready to make a commitment. Maybe if they were together day-to-day, she would have more confidence in a future. But not at this time.”
This matches up with what we were hearing yesterday about it being a distance thing, but it kind of ruins the scenario in my head where distance was this supervillain trying to split them up and turns it into a real story about real people parting amicably. Aw shucks. A second source says:
“Jason never got rid of his place in L.A., and Michelle’s life with Matilda was and has always been in New York. While Jason made every effort to make them a priority in his life – and they were top priority – he still couldn’t drop everything and leave his life and career in L.A.”
Well here’s what I say to that — how about I keep proving my commitment to you, Jason Segel, by watching How I Met Your Mother in its fourteenth and fifteenth seasons, and you can prove your commitment to me by sporadically appearing in New York and snuggling me gently to sleep in a four-poster bed while we laugh and play with vampire puppets? That’s truly all I would want out of a relationship with you, and I’ll consider it commitment enough.
