Wherever you are, sit down. Put your hands on the sides of your head, roughly covering your ears, and press inward, because I am about to blow your mind: the Backstreet Boys are celebrating their TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY this year. They officially formed on April 20th, 1993. Boom, explosion, brain matter on the walls. I told you to push firmly! While you were going about your life still secretly listening to the BSB and NSYNC Pandora station while you clean your apartment in your underoos (no? just me? cool.), these guys were getting older, having babies, going to rehab, being adults. Like bigtime adults.
Case in point: Nick Carter, the guy I’ve still been considering the baby of the group, is actually thirty-three years old and just got engaged to his girlfriend of over four years, ‘fitness expert and actress’ Lauren Kitt. According to him, it’s been a long time coming:
“I had the ring in my pocket for two weeks. I was like, ‘I don’t want it anymore!’ It was driving me insane. I just wanted to get it out of my hands and on to hers.”
He proposed down in the Florida Keys, on a boat with Lauren’s father and some mutual friends of the couple. He got down on one knee to present the seven carat engagement ring. You know, as every proper boy band member is trained to do in boy band finishing school (read: The Mickey Mouse Club). But once she accepted his proposal, Nick forgot how to live and move about the planet as a human being:
“She said, ‘Yes,’ and I’m, like, ‘I don’t know what to do.She said, ‘You’re supposed to put it on my finger.’ So I did. I was in shock.”
Even though the two of them have been together over four years, Lauren is claiming she was totally surprised, saying, “I wasn’t expecting it. It just felt very surreal. We both are just so happy in love right now and on cloud nine.”But lest you think it’s all moonbeams and fairytales for these two, they have important, pressing engagements around which to schedule their impending nuptials — Backstreet Boys concerts.
“Our first thought was, ‘We need to contact the Backstreet Boys and find out when their schedule will permit. It’s not up to us. It’s up to the schedule.”
Concerts. Still. In 2013. It’s an odd odd world out there, you guys, and I don’t think we’re in childhood anymore, Toto.
