It’s Friday. And we all know what that means. No one can get any work done because they’re too busy looking online for celebrity duets to kick off the weekend. Well look no further friends, because last night Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert performed the most magical duet I’ve ever seen two celebrities perform. Which really means something, because I one time had a dream where Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill came to my house and sang a song from Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit that never made it into the movie.
Yes, Jimmy and Stephen topped that as they sat side by side at the piano singing the classic song “Ivory and Ivory.” Well the soon-to-be-classic song. They kinda stole the routine from Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder’s “Ebony and Ivory.” But I’ll go ahead and say that the changes Jim and Steve made to their version made it more touching. Mostly because it’s about two people who are almost friends, but not quite there yet.
I think we all have some almost-friends in our lives. People that we like and people that we enjoy, but people we would never ever even contemplate inviting to our wedding — or even to an all-you-can-eat soup, salad and breadsticks meal at Olive Garden. Nevertheless, the almost friends are the people you smile at in the office at work as you wait your turn for the microwave, the friends of friends who hold your purse while you take turns popping a squat in a dirty bar bathroom and the people who you stalk on Facebook when you’ve finished stalking all your ex-boyfriends new girlfriend’s family vacation photos.
This song is for those people.
