Here’s a fun fact we learned at the 2013 Grammys: Taylor Swift wrote the song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” about a traveling circus performer who’s forced to break-up with her boyfriend because well, she’s a traveling circus performer. Sure, love’s nice and all. But it’s nowhere near as satisfying as traveling across the country with clowns and acrobats and tigers in cages. Seriously, as someone who spent my early blogging years on the circus beat I totally get this. In fact I’m surprised I didn’t pick up on all the lyrical hints before this moment. I saw so many couples break-up when the circus pulled out of town. So many tearful goodbyes said while doing handstands on the backs of trained elephants.
Another fun fact we learned tonight: Taylor Swift still thinks it’s age-appropriate to get back at her ex-boyfriends by calling them out during her public performances. Yes, during tonight’s rendition of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” she did a little British riff that many One Direction fans think is aimed at their beloved Harry Styles. You know, because he’s British and all.
Now, is it possible that Taylor Swift’s practicing for the Madonna-stage of her career by throwing out the British accent. Of course! Is that very unlikely? Of course!
This is Taylor Swift we’re talking about here. Just moments after breaking up with Harry Styles (her “boyfriend” of like two weeks and three days), she tweeted out a dramatic line about going to the studio. Which is a casual phrase for singers that she’s managed to turn into quite the threat. Almost as much of a threat as her revenge cleavage from the 2013 People’s Choice Awards.
All I have to say is good luck Harry Styles. If I know Taylor like I think I know Taylor, this only step one in her revenge plan. Today you’re getting mocked in a performance, tomorrow you’re the subject of a song called, “curly hair is like so stupid, right ladies, you all with me on this one!?”
