How do I love Lizzy Caplan? Let me count the ways. She’s smart, she’s funny, and she was on one of the greatest canceled TV shows of all time. Hence, it stands to reason that her first foray into the world of fashion would be done with the perfect amount of sarcastic flair.
To help promote Vena Cava’s new clothing line “Viva Vena,” Lizzy starred in their “fashion film” wearing all manner of pretty clothes. But this is not just any fashion film; it’s a fashion film that parodies the very concept of fashion films. Meta!
In it, Lizzy gives the camera a deep, doe eyed stare as she flits about in flower garlands and describes her wonderfully creative lifestyle:
“When I’m alone, I like to pretend I’m in a movie. The kind of movie I don’t quite understand. Sometimes I think to myself in French, and listen to old records from the 60s. They’re way better than stuff today. More…authentic.”
Can you, or can you not, picture Lana Del Rey (for H&M) saying the exact same things, but sincerely? This satire is so spot-on it hurts.
The irony, of course, is that Lizzy Caplan makes a beautiful manic pixie Tumblr girl even as she is making fun of said girls. And the clothes in the video are very sincerely for sale. It’s almost like Vena Cava is saying, “just because we make whimsical hipster clothes doesn’t mean we take ourselves too seriously.” And that’s a statement I can support.
