While you ladies sat around last Friday morning doing work and searching Youtube for the full Babysitter’s Club movie, I grabbed drinks with Khloe Kardashian. And by grabbed drinks I mean, I grabbed a coffee while I waited for it to be my turn to interview her and I’m 78% sure she also grabbed coffee at some point during the morning. We’re both ladies, we both have periods and we both drink coffee. What more do you need to know about how much we have in common?
Okay I’ll tell you everything. Khloe’s currently working with U by Kotex’s Generation Know. It’s a super cool program for real girls who want real answers to their real questions. There’s a lot of realness going on here. Too much for just one site in fact. You can check them out on Facebook AND Twitter.
Khlo (yeah we made it the Khlo level) is so excited about working with Generation Know that she’s meeting with important media people to talk about it. If I’m not mistaken, my interview followed her interviews with Diane Sawyer, Brian Williams and Xenophilius Lovegood. (Keep in mind, I might be mistaken. That sometimes happens to me when I’m trying to sound impressive.)
Naturally during our conversation about real women with real bodies, periods came up. Don’t they always? While most celebrities are like “stop asking me about my flow, I thought you came to talk to me about my movie!” Khloe was totally cool talking about the ole menstrual cycle.
Since Generation Know’s all about busting myths (like you can’t get pregnant if you have sex during a Teen Mom marathon), I asked Khlo what myths she believed in as a young, naive teenager. She was all like, “nothing crazy, but I’ve heard some really non-scientific stuff.”
I love that too because you learn even some that I read that I never even heard of that I’m like—“someone believed that?” but they’re like passed down from generation to generation! One was, when you get your period never go in the ocean because a shark’s gonna attack you. But I remember details, like—they could smell blood up to seven miles away. When someone’s giving you this many details you’re just like that has to be true.
While this shark rumor sounds just as unbelievable as the fact that there was no room on that board for Jack, I do remember hearing horrible things back in my days as a middle schooler. And I do remember that most of them came from me. If you thought I developed my exaggeration problem recently, you thought wrong. I spent far too much time in AOL chatrooms to not spread a few completely insane puberty myths around during 6th grade lunch. You’re welcome parents who had to answer ridiculous questions from their 11-year-old! (And sorry Mom for all those phone calls from angry parents!)
As a non-truth-teller, I fondly remember telling my little sister horribly untrue things about puberty, Unfortch, Khlo couldn’t remember her older sisters doing the same. Which makes obviously me sad for her.
You know I don’t remember them [doing that]. Cause Kourtney’s 5 years older than me and Kim’s 3 and a half years older than me. So when I’m 10, Kourtney’s 15, you don’t want to hang out. We got close when I turned 16. So I don’t really remember those talks. My mom would talk but they were really just like, oh, mom— You know it’s really more like…
What’s the point of having older sisters if they’re not going to lie to you about what’s going on with your body? To this day, my sister still worries that she never grew that third nipple. And to make the Kardashian sisterly love problems even worse, Khloe refuses to lie to Kylie and Kendall. It’s like a family tradition to be nice and honest and open with each other. #WEIRD.
I have always wanted my sisters to feel like they can come and talk to me about anything cause I know how awkward or uncomfortable it can be around that age.
But that’s neither here nor there, I guess. It’s up to Khloe if she wants to be a good sister or not. What’s important to me is that Khloe Kardashian and I finally got a chance to sit down and talk about periods. Isn’t that what life’s all about?
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go watch my phone and wait for Khlo to follow up with those brunch plans I suggested to her telepathically as I left the room.
