Earlier this week I had the horrible misfortune to stumble upon a 3D recreation of the scene in Lion King where crazy Uncle Scar murders his brother Mufasa by pushing him into a stampede. While the infamous scene made me tear up n 2D, it made me bawl hysterically in 3D. It’s an incredibly sad scene that has no place in a children’s movie. No place at all.
However years after seeing the scene for the first time, I’m looking at it a little bit differently now. While I used to feel bad for Mufasa and Simba, I’m now focusing a little more closely on Scar. Something’s not right with him. In fact, I’d go as far as to say a lot of things aren’t right with him. A quick Google search reveals he might be a sociopath!
From a website I found on the Internet Superhighway, these are the symptoms:
- Glibness and Superficial Charm
- Manipulative and Conning
- Grandiose Sense of Self
- Pathological Lying
- Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
- Shallow Emotions
- Incapacity for Love
- Need for Stimulation
- Callousness/Lack of Empathy
- Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
- Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
- Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
- Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
So yeah, Scar’s likely a sociopath. But is he the only sociopath that Disney pushed on us as young, impressionable children? No, no, not at all. Once I started thinking about it, I quickly realized that all the Disney villains are all suffering from an incurable case of the sociopathies. Not one of them is redeemable in any way.
Ursula, Captain Hook, Jafar, The Queen of Hearts — the list could go on and on and on. And sadly so could the diagnoses.
Hello Gaston! Have you met our friend Narcissism Personality Disorder? I think you two would really hit it off!
While people have worried for years that Disney princesses are turning our girls into empty-headed homemakers who will do anything for love — they’ve completely overlooked the fact that these same girls are meeting genuine sociopaths at a very young age.
No wonder we like watching Law & Order:SVU marathons, Dexter and Lifetime movies that star Rob Lowe so much! It all makes so much sense now. Disney exposed us to sociopaths so early on in our lives that we grew up believing that they’re just as much a part of our lives as true love, mermaid kings and talking candlesticks.
Way to go Disney…
