What would you do if you’d just been unmasked as the internet creeper behind a fake girlfriend hoax involving a famous football player? I would probably have booked my ticket to Brazil by now to live out the rest of my days on a beach where nobody knows me. Manti Te’o hoaxer Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, however, decided it would be a better investment in his future to show his face on television in a tell-all interview with Dr. Phil. Maybe he couldn’t afford a real therapist?
In an interview that will run tomorrow on The Dr. Phil Show, Ronaiah and Dr. Phil delve into the reasons behind the years-long fakelationship, figuring out Ronnie’s crazy together. A preview run by The Today Show earlier today (above) shows Phil asking him some very pointed questions.
As it turns our, Ronaiah had more invested in this than one might initially expect of an internet hoaxer. He was not doing this as a means to grift money, but a means to grift Manti’s affection. A grifter of the heart!
“Here we have a young man that fell deeply, romantically in love,” says Dr. Phil. “I ask him straight up, was this a romantic relationship to you, and he says ‘yes.’ I said, are you then therefore gay? And he says ‘well, when you put it that way, yes.’ And then he caught himself and said ‘I am confused.’”
“I am confused”: understatement of the year.
Dr. Phil: a man who understands the complexities of human sexuality.
Unsurprisingly, he also reports the guy had some “life experiences that damaged him in serious ways,” because if the person who did this was not damaged, he would probably be a monster, no? Tune in tomorrow when Dr. Phil drags this man’s mental problems and struggles with his sexuality out into the open for America’s drooling fascination! You can check your local listings here.
