There are many things one might reasonably ask Zooey Deschanel to explain: her self-conscious quirkiness, how she keeps her bangs looking so perfect all the time, and how responsible she feels, on a scale of 1-10, for the introduction of the word “adorkable” into the English lexicon. But of all her various appealing and annoying qualities, the one for which she is least accountable is most definitely her name, which, after all, she did not choose for herself.
But that didn’t stop one critic from taking her to task for it at a recent New Girl press conference, asking Zooey the hard-hitting question, “can you explain your name?”
I’m guessing she blinked her giant blue eyes several times in confusion, wondering if her reputation for playing woman-children had convinced people she is actually still in kindergarten, before replying, “My name? My first name or my last name?” The critic replied that he would like both, thanks. “My name on the show?” she asked. “Zooey. Zooey Deschanel,” the critic spat back at her.
“I was named after [the JD Salinger book] Franny and Zooey,” she answered. “My last name is French.” Nailed it! And the crowd went wild. But let’s hope this small victory doesn’t lull her into a sense of complacency. Someone on the next stop on the press tour might ask her what her favorite color or animal is, and she’ll need to be prepared for that.
