In a new interview with Elle UK, Scarlett Johansson talks about her two-year marriage to Ryan Reynolds. You know, the guy who secretly married young blonde actress Blake Lively last year because he got drunk and confused her with his ex-wife, another young blonde actress. While I don’t know ScarJo’s actual tone during the interview, I can only hope that it’s as backhanded-complimenty as it sounds.
To paraphrase what she said: “I love being married to Ryan Reynolds! Marriage was very fun! Like a Pinterest board come to life! With that said, I will never marry anyone else for as long as I shall live.”
To real-phrase what she said: “ I got married when I was young and it was incredibly romantic and I liked being married, actually. But it is different. It’s hard to put into words. To me, being in a functioning relationship doesn’t mean you have to be married.”
While I’m actively working on my backhanded compliments (resolution #45), I don’t think they’re near this level of perfection yet. I’m still around this level: “did you do something different with your hair today, because it looks great!” I’m getting there, but I’m not quite ready to talk about my ex with an English publication yet. However reading interviews like these inspire me to really get moving on my training. You know, get to the level where someone feels really good about what I said until they repeat back to themselves later on and go “hey, wait a minute…does my hair usually look bad???”
I can only cross my fingers that Blake Lively reads this article (but not this one) and starts perfecting her backhanded compliment quotes for when Ryan Reynolds marries Dakota Fanning in a few years.
