In an incredibly depressing news story, a paparazzo got killed by a car last night as he crossed the street in an attempt to photograph Justin Bieber. While driving in Los Angeles yesterday, the paparazzo spotted Bieber’s white Ferarri pulled over by the cops and he stopped to see if he could get any quality photos of the celebrity. However it turns out that Bieber wasn’t there and the cops told the paparazzo to get back in his car. As he crossed the street to return to his vehicle, another car struck and killed him.
Later Bieber released a statement that not only expressed condolences for the family of the victim, but also sent a strong message about passing meaningful legislation to prevent this from happening again.
“While I was not present nor directly involved with this tragic accident, my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim. Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves.”
While it’s tragic that something like this has to happen for people to pay attention, it’s unfortunately what usually compels lawmakers to actually take the time to make changes. For several years now we’ve heard harrowing stories about celebrities being chased by paparazzi while they’re driving and it only felt like a matter of time before something horrible happened. No one should be killed while they’re doing their job — whether that’s the celebrities or the paparazzi. There’s no reason that we’ve let this situation get so out of control.
