Look out, muggles! There’s a new movie about magicians on its way, and it looks extremely promising. I say this mainly based on the fact that magicians are inherently funny, and also on the fact that it’s got Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi and Olivia Wilde in it. (Sorry Jim Carrey, but you have annoyed me since I was a child.)
The first trailer for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone starts out with Steve Buscemi and Steve Carell as dorky kids who become magicians so that people will like them. Solid reasoning. Fast forward to thirty years later, and they are “Burt Wonderstone” and “Anton Marvel,” two accomplished illusionists who wear sparkly tuxedos and have trouble selling tickets to their shows. The cause of their downfall? A David Blaine-like newcomer with sinister facial hair (Carrey), for whom “magic” includes ridiculous stunts like holding his pee for 12 days.
And guess what happens next? Yes, wackiness ensues. You’ve got magic, mayhem, Alan Arkin as their mentor, and fierce competition. Oh, and someone gets with Olivia Wilde. Can Buscemi and Carell save what looks like a cheesy script full of slapstick humor and make it hilarious? I don’t know, but I’m certainly willing to give it a chance.
