Ellen DeGeneres’ Newtown Dedication Is More Proof That She’s The World’s Best Person

In case you needed more proof that Ellen DeGeneres is the world’s best person, here’s how she opened her show today. It was The Ellen Show‘s first time filming since Friday’s tragedy in Newtown, so she made the following dedication to honor the victims at Sandy Hook Elementary:

“Today we’re taping our first show since the events that took place in Connecticut. My goal for this show everyday is to make you happy, to make you feel good for an hour. I want it to be a safe zone, I want it to be light and filled with joy. I want you to know that you can watch with your family, and it won’t be mean or sad. I want it to be uplifting and I wanna celebrate all that’s good with life.

And we’re gonna do the show today but it’s gonna be a struggle because my heart is broken for those families and for all the people in Newtown. We’re holding you in our hearts and today’s show is dedicated to you.”

To me, this is perfect. What happened in Newtown was the absolute worst — beyond anything that most of us could even imagine — but I think Ellen handles it as best she can. And that’s what’s so wonderful about her: I never have to worry with Ellen that she’s gonna exploit a tragedy or an event or even a guest. Aside from wanting her show to succeed, she doesn’t seem overtly interested in fame or money. As far as I can tell, she hosts her show because it’s fun for her. The questions she asks of her guests she asks because she’s curious about them as people, not to incite a negative reaction or stir up drama. She seems to love making other people feel good, and that’s the best kind of person. She sits down with people and takes them seriously, and tells the audience honestly what’s important to her. She loves to laugh but she’s willing to cry. She has respect and integrity, but she’s never afraid to look stupid or silly. Clearly I’m obsessed with her, but we all have a lot we could learn from her. Today and every day.
