The new teaser trailer for Star Trek: Into Darkness was released today, but if you were holding your breath waiting on the new footage to reveal anything at all about the sequel, you’re probably turning blue right now. It’s an exciting two minutes, but it answers absolutely no questions about the plotline for the movie. Such stealth and secrecy! I’d be super annoyed if this wasn’t such an amazing tactic. By withholding details about the film, J.J. Abrams is essentially ensuring that everyone has to come see it to find out even the most basic details about it.
The main thing that’s being discussed about this film, in constant web forums and polls, is who the goddamn villain is. We know that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing him, and there are some speculated frontrunners like Khan and Gary Mitchell, but everyone’s been remaining impressively tight-lipped, so there’s absolutely no way to know. But you know what? I don’t give a shit. This is an awesome trailer, and it’s gonna be an awesome movie. It’s got amazing actors like Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg. It has a lot of money behind it, and a director who proved with the first movie that he really cares about the series. And based on this preview, it looks like we gon’ go ahead and kill off some people. I love a franchise that’s not afraid to let a few heads roll.
All in all, I couldn’t be more excited for this movie. I love everything about the way it’s being handled, to the point that I’m considering going to see The Hobbit again just to see the nine minute theatrical trailer. Don’t you do me dirty, J.J. I’m counting on you.
