5. Olsen Twins
Despite being completely overshadowed by their little sister Elizabeth Olsen this year, the Olsen Twins still managed to get headlines for selling preposterously expensive accessories. Not only did they open our eyes to the magic of gluing prescription pills onto leather, but they also made it easier for kids all over America to convince their parents to spring for a custom embroidered LL Bean backpack. After all, what’s $50 for a backpack when the Olsens are selling theirs for $16,900.
6. Miley Cyrus
Our new fave gal pal managed to get headlines almost every day this year for doing absolutely nothing of note. If that doesn’t prove that she cracked the secret celebrity PR strategy then I don’t know what does.
Also, in case you missed it, she cut her hair this year. And not for an Oscar. Just because she’s just being Miley.
7. Beyonce’s (Alleged) Surrogate
Remember 2011? Probably not. Blue Ivy didn’t exist yet and therefore the world didn’t matter. The only thing that I can (vaguely) remember from that year was all the talk about Blue Ivy being carried by a secret surrogate — a surrogate who allegedly birthed her in January and then disappeared. Or didn’t disappear. We don’t know who she is or what she looks like or if she even exists, either way, she brought the next generation of American royalty into our life. So props, major, major props.
8. The PR Team Behind the “Kristen Stewart Cheating on Robert Pattinson” Scandal
Okay, these people aren’t celebrities in the traditional sense. But they managed to create the biggest celebrity scandal of 2012 by having Kristen Stewart get photographed cheating on Robert Pattinson with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders.
America could not stop talking about this twisted love triangle that conveniently kept us in suspense up until the Breaking Dawn premiere. Well played PR team, well played.
