When All Else Fails And Things Seem Hopeless, We Can Count On Mr. Rogers And Cute Animals

Mr. RogersThere is nothing anyone can say or do to change the fact that many people lost their lives in Connecticut yesterday, and most of them were children.  Like President Obama said, they were “beautiful  little kids between the ages of 5-10. They had their entire lives ahead of them — birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.”

This is an entertainment site where you can find hilarious anecdotes on TLC trainwrecks and John Mayer’s sex life because that’s what we do here, but I can’t begin this morning without acknowledging that we’re all hurting for Newtown today. There are no comforting words for a tragedy of this magnitude, and I’m not going to pretend I can come up with any.

What I can do, however, is share a few things that always make me feel better: Fred Rogers quotes and adorable animal pictures.  Fred and I are both native Pittsburghers, and his words are often repeated in our city during good times and bad.  His life’s work was dedicated to understanding and caring for children, but I think we can carry some of his lessons on through adulthood too:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.”

I’ve been cynical since I was nine, but sometimes even I can use a good inspirational quote every now and then.  I’m not certain what we can all do to help just yet but I know we can help, somehow.  It’s so hard to know what to do during times like these.

The coming days and weeks will be undoubtedly be filled with questions, dialogues on gun control and mental illness, and opinions.   Since there will never be enough answers to sufficiently answer the big “Why?”, let’s try and find a smile as we sip our coffee and enjoy some happy images for a bit.

Are you happily distracted yet?

No?  How about now:

If you aren’t smiling by now, you have no soul.

Is the ice around your heart melting yet?

I knew it. You’re totally squee-ing right now.
animal7If four blind newborn kittens with a side dish of Mr. Rogers doesn’t make your day a little brighter, I don’t know what will.  Now that I have a renewed sense of hope (for the moment at least), I’m going to spend some time figuring out just what it is about John Mayer’s penis that makes beautiful women forget that he looks like a greasy Gomez Addams.
