Notorious loudmouth Wendy Williams turned a few heads yesterday when she threw a bit of random and unexpected shade on Beyonce when discussing her on her talk show…at least, unexpected to those unfamiliar with Wendy Williams.
The bit began nicely enough, with her mentioning that Beyonce is making an HBO documentary about her own life, and that she is definitely going to watch it. But then she got mean:
“Fortunately one of the TVs in our kitchen has closed captioning so I’ll be able to understand what she says…you know Beyonce can’t talk, she sounds like she has a fifth grade education. Excuse me, I’m a fan, but you have to call a spade a spade, I mean honestly. And we really do have the closed captioning, just for times like that.”
And then, just like that, she played a clip!
While it might seem odd for Wendy to switch back and forth from being nice to someone, to saying something incredibly mean (and not in a jokey way, either!) and then back again, this is par for the course for her; it’s almost like she’s got nastiness Tourettes. But the diss on Bey’s diction and level of education just seems unnecessary and a little bit random. Of all the celebrities I’ve had trouble understanding in interviews, Beyonce isn’t one of them…in fact, she seems to go out of her way to seem poised and polished at all times.
I realize it’s hard work producing a constant stream of pop culture related verbal diarrhea, day in, day out (ask me how I know!), but Wendy Williams kind of fucked this one up.
