I cannot tell a lie: Mariah Carey‘s version of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is one of my favorite Christmas songs of all time. I have had multiple serious fights with my boyfriend when he’s dared to question Mariah’s pop supremacy, both in relation to Christmas songs and in general. And last night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Mariah, Jimmy, and Jimmy’s awesome house band The Roots decided to make the song even more awesome by picking up some children’s instruments and going to town on it with the help of some adorable children.
Sounding like the best music class of all time, Mariah, ?uestlove and friends played the song using woodblock, tambourine, sleigh bells, xylophone, kazoo, melodica, recorder, bongos, and all the other instruments you fought over as a child, with the notable exception of the triangle. (Why no love for the triangle?! Was it causing problems?) And the children coming in on “all I want for Christmas is you” gave it an extra sprinkling of seasonal magic. The only thing that could make it better is if Justin Bieber himself had been one of said children. Just kidding, that would have made it weird.
Enjoy this excellent late night video clip whenever you need help getting into the holiday spirit. It worked for this secular New York Jew!
