Personally, the jury’s still out as for whether I’m gonna watch Bates Motel, the eerie Psycho prequel coming to our TVs sometime in 2013. But A&E has already ordered ten episodes without even seeing the pilot, so they obviously think they’re on to something! And now they’ve released the first teaser images plus two teaser videos… and yeah, it looks pretty damn creepy.
First off, the synopsis, though it’s fairly straightforward:
Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga) buys a motel on the outskirts of an idyllic coastal town seeking a fresh start with her teenage son, the handsome and shy Norman (Freddie Highmore).
And here, your first video teasers:
The first one I feel like better embodies the weird themes of sex and murder that were in Psycho and will definitely be present in the Oedipal relationship between Norma and Norman. A panning shot through the Bates Motel, only to reveal a woman handcuffed beneath the sink? ScreenRant logically guessed that this could be Norman’s early work, but I wonder if he actually gets his twisted gene from Mother. When I watched Psycho as a kid, I assumed that Norman completely projected the murderous persona onto his dead mom, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he picked up some of her wickedness while in the womb. Because Freddie Highmore is adorable, and while I can buy him playing Norman, we’ve got to see him start out sweet and innocent before his mom ruins him.
Plus, and maybe it’s just me, but the teasers brought to mind American Horror Story. Both the current season set in a mental institution, sure, but also the stomach-churning unease of the first season where the family was dealing with a haunted house. However, it doesn’t seem like Rubber Man will be making an appearance anytime soon.
