Barbara Walters has anointed Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson one of 2012′s “Most Fascinating People” despite the fact that she’s only seven years old. And you know what? I agree with her. However, I do not agree with the reasoning behind her decision.
Explaining her choice to Us Weekly, Barbara Walters says:
A lot of people will say, ‘For heaven’s sake, this is ridiculous, this is a child at 5 or 6 years old entering beauty contests,’” she says. “But the relationship between Alana and her mother — that’s the story, the two of them. It’s very touching.
Honey Boo Boo is not an obnoxious little girl. She’s sweet and loving with her mother and loving with her sisters [Jessica, Lauryn and Anna]. And now Anna has a new baby, and the baby has [three] thumbs — but so what? It’ll make you smile.
Hold the phone. Are we to believe it’s not only news, but fascinating news, that a mother loves her daughter, despite entering her in beauty pageants? That’s a little condescending, no? Plus, Alana is so an obnoxious little girl. She is constantly doing wacky things for attention, and probably has undiagnosed ADHD. But that’s just part of her fabulousness.
Personally, I think Honey Boo Boo is fascinating not for the love that exists in her family (a trait common to most families), but for the dialogue that’s formed around her. The insanely varied and intense reactions people have had to Here Comes Honey Boo Boo have sparked people to talk about class, poverty, diet, our food system, cultural values, sexuality, and even race in America in a way no reality TV show ever has before. It’s for these reasons that Honey Boo Boo is one of the most fascinating people of 2012, not the unusual situation whereby the members of a family feel love for one other.
