Either Ariel Winter’s mom is taking the Michael Lohan online course in “Making Yourself Look More Horrible Than Anyone Believed Possible” or she’s attempting to get the #1 spot on the eventual E! countdown of worst celebrity parents. That’s the only way to explain her bizarre behavior in the past week.
After news broke that Ariel Winter got removed from her home due to allegations of physical and emotional abuse, her mother Chrisoula Workman went on the offensive. Yes, at a time when she needed to prove to everyone watching that she did indeed care about her daughter, she started spreading rumors about her. As if being 14 isn’t hard enough and as if being a child star isn’t hard enough, Chrisoula Workman felt the need to prove she’s not abusive by speaking about her daughter publicly. Phenomenal parenting. Really proving your point that you have Ariel’s best interests in mind.
She kicked off her publicity tour last week with an E! interview and a statement to People:
“It’s all untrue, it’s all untrue,” Chrisoula Workman told People magazine. “I have my doctor’s letter that my daughter’s never been abused. … I have stylists’ letters that she’s never been abused.”
She added in an interview with E!: “I would never abuse her in any way, and I have always tried my best to always protect her and do what is right for her. My daughter is in a business that requires you to grow up fast. It’s hard enough being a teenage girl, but it’s even harder when you are in the public eye. However, because you are in the public eye, it doesn’t mean you are no longer in need of good parenting.”
After that unnecessary interview she gave Ariel a back-handed compliment that essentially accused her of lying. Oh, and don’t miss her comment about her older daughter Shanelle Gray. You know, the other daughter who got removed from her home as a teenager.
In response, Chris warned the judge that Ariel was lying as saying, “She is an actress so I’m sure she can cry at the drop of a hat.” Regarding her older daughter, she claimed Shanelle had no credibility because she ran off with a gang member years ago and ended up in a crack house.
Then she went a step further and told a judge that Ariel owed all her success to her:
During the contentious guardianship proceedings of Modern Family star Ariel Winter her mother, Chrisoula Workman dramatically told the judge, “my daughter is very successful, very successful because of me,” RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting. “I’m the one who helped get where she is. She didn’t do it on her own.”
Yes, it is true that a child star cannot drive themselves to auditions, nor can they do things like negotiate contracts. But Ariel Winter’s successful because she’s a talented actress. Not because her mother’s vicariously living through her. And if you believe the rumors you’re hearing from anonymous sources who work on Modern Family, her mother’s actually a nightmare on the set.
So yeah, whether or not the initial allegations about Chrisoula Workman are true, she’s certainly proving to us all now that she’s not the best mother. And sadly, that’s not that rare when it comes to child stars. Hopefully a judge makes a custody decision for Ariel on November 20th that allows her to have as normal and as healthy of a childhood as possible.
