In news that’s sure to make you start flailing, the Oxford English Dictionary has named GIF as America’s Word of the Year! Every year you hear about internet lingo and pop culture references officially making their way into the dictionary, but this is an extra-special honor. While GIFs have been around for over 25 years, it’s really only in the last year or so that people have come to appreciate and utilize them to their full extent.

“It’s safe to say 2012 was of the year of the GIF, for sure,” one self-described GIF artist told the Daily Dot. “Between online viral marketing campaigns and music videos being shot in a way specifically keeping in mind that GIFs will be made—it seems everyone has finally accepted and recognized the power of the GIF, so to speak.”

There are entire Tumblr blogs devoted to these hilarious reaction shots, and I often find myself working them into conversations in lieu of comebacks or punchlines. You see them all over Crushable, and this honor only has us more committed to posting the best GIFs. Over the past year we’ve come across some utterly incredible GIFs and have amassed an unofficial collection.       I’d say that GIFs, as anything else, are personal preference. But I’m a bit miffed that I gave you Hermione saying “bitch please” and Wacka Flocka Flame punching a bullet, and you’re comparing me to some hyper preteen.
