When Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of New York City in late October, both Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel tweeted their support for the victims. “Taking in the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy…my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone that was affected,” he wrote on November 1st. On the same day, she said, “Sending my prayers and love to New York City and to everyone affected by Hurricane Sandy.”
But maybe they worried that people didn’t take them seriously enough. After all, they had gotten married in Italy shortly before the hurricane struck the East Coast. Not to mention that one of their friends produced a tasteless video where he paid homeless people $40 to gripe about not being invited to the Timberbiel nuptials. Justin wrote an apology letter that was convincing in its length and emotion, but like I said, I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided they should put their money where their mouths are.
After returning from their honeymoon in Tanzania, the newlyweds visited Far Rockaway, one of the areas hit most severely, to hand out supplies. While there are plenty of paparazzi photos documenting this act of goodwill, we were interested in the twitpics we could round up. As you can see, Justin and Jessica weren’t dressed much differently from the other volunteers, and seemed willing to help out in whatever way was needed as they unloaded backpacks and such to the victims.
Oh hey look, it’s Timbaland! Yep, in addition to their own starpower, the couple brought along Justin’s frequent collaborator to do some manual labor for a few hours. As VH1 points out, these people lost their homes and likely don’t care that JT is the one handing them their backpack filled with supplies. Still, it’s a really kind gesture because not only do we need a lot more bodies out there, but because these celebrities don’t have to do it. I say that not to let them off the hook, but to reiterate that they have the power to ignore this disaster. But, like Emma Watson serving meals on wheels and Alec Baldwin comforting NYU students, they do it without being asked.
