This twitpic is Lady Gaga expressing her delight at Barack Obama being re-elected, but I’m going to use it to also represent her commitment to helping New York City rebuild after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy last week. As we know, Gaga — formerly known as Stefani Germanotta – hails from the Big Apple and was an NYU student before she dropped out to become a music superstar. And while other NYC-based celebrities like Ben Stiller and Alec Baldwin donated their time, Gaga has found a different way to help out.
As in, she’s donating $1 million dollars. No, this doesn’t appear to be a joke. She posted the following pledge on her Little Monsters website just a few hours ago:
To New York and The American Red Cross
Today I pledge 1 million dollars to New York & The American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief. If it wasn’t for NYC: the Lower Eastside, Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn, I would not be the woman or artist that I am today. New York is relentless ambition, a drive to succeed, a place where there is a natural pursuit of diversity through compassion. Please accept this gift on behalf of myself, my parents Joe and Cynthia, and my sister Natali; with our deepest gratitude New York for raising us. Thank you for helping me build my spirit. I will now help you rebuild yours. Sincerely, Lady Gaga and The Germanottas
What I’m really curious to see is if this is just an isolated incident of Gaga pledging her money, or if she expects her Little Monsters to match her in any way possible. After all, she just passed 31 million Twitter followers, more than anyone else on the network. If each one of them donated a dollar, that’d go a long way toward helping rebuild the areas most hit by Sandy.
