Josh Sundquist is a motivational speaker and Paralympic skiing champion, because at the age of nine he lost his left leg to cancer. He also may be the most hopeful, well-grounded person I’ve ever seen. He became a YouTube sensation circa 2010 when he released his “Amputee Rap” poking fun at himself and celebrating everything he had achieved with only one leg. He tours the country for speaking engagements and has written a memoir titled Just Don’t Fall.
You know what else Josh does? He takes advantage of his one-legged situation to concoct some truly delightful Halloween costumes. The one above is his latest—he’s the one-legged lamp from A Christmas Story. However, he pointed out, he may never top his genius idea from 2010:
I just can’t, you guys. I feel like I might’ve seen this photo online in 2010 and laughed my head off at it, but never known anything about the man behind it. Now I’m glad to learn more about Josh, watch his videos, and look at his Instagram pics of the skid marks from when he falls onstage while trying to run with his crutches.
And I don’t think this was a Halloween costume, but I love how he and his girlfriend recreated the poster for How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days. You know, with Josh standing in for Matthew McConaughey and doing a better job on one leg than he did on two.
This guy is so damn inspiring. Today, looking over the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, but also any day—he’s truly made the most of a horrible twist of fate and has such an incredible sense of humor about it.
