Alexander Ludwig and Wes Bentley both suffered some pretty awful on-screen deaths in The Hunger Games earlier this year. As brutal tribute Cato, Alexander got ripped apart by the muttations, and only after Katniss gave him a mercy shot with her arrow was he allowed to die. Less grisly but just as chilling was Gamemaker Seneca Crane getting locked in a room with the poisonous nightlock berries after he failed at eliminating Katniss and/or Peeta.
Turns out these were just practice for the actors’ next project! Final Girl is a dark comedy that aims to mock the horror-movie notion of the “Final Girl,” or the last girl left standing at the end of a slasher flick. We’ve long known that Abigail Breslin – one of our 25 Crushable Girls Under 25 — will be starring as Veronica. But now we know more about the plot and just how badass she’s gonna be:
Loner Veronica is new to school, shy and vulnerable the perfect target for a group of teenage boys who lure girls into the woods to hunt and kill them for sport. It’s only after they get her alone that she turns the tables on them, escaping and revealing she’s armed and knows how to defend herself. Little do they know, Veronica is an assassin-in-training, and she’s chosen killing these boys as her final test. When the dust clears, Veronica will find out if she can be the final girl these boys ever have a chance to hurt.
ShockTillYouDrop reports that Alexander and Wes have joined the cast for the movie, which also includes Michael Trevino (The Vampire Diaries), Francesca Eastwood, and Connor Paolo (Gossip Girl). I’m gonna guess that Alexander is one of the boys that Veronica gets her revenge on, but there are more options for Wes’ role. Sympathetic teacher? Creepy stepdad figure? Veronica’s mentor?
Of course, my esteem for this movie dipped a little when I learned that it’s being directed by celebrity photographer Tyler Shields. I find his photo shoots less compelling and more trying too hard to be controversial. Plus, if we want to split hairs, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard kinda blew the Final Girl idea out of the water with Cabin in the Woods earlier this year.
