Taylor Swift’s new album came out yesterday, which means that I have about 16 new songs to sing in my car and that I can finally put my bachelor’s degree in detective work to good use. Instead of reviewing each song on T-Swifts new album and comparing it to or other albums or saying how much more pop than country this album is, I’m just going to get right to what everyone cares about and say who I think each song is about.
I have spent hours taking apart every word of these songs so you know which exes she is bashing (or which current relationship she’s celebrating). Obviously there are clues in her songs, and Taylor always gives clues in her album booklet by capitalizing letters in the album’s lyrics…and things aren’t looking good for Jake Gyllenhaal.
Sure these are just guesses and sure we can’t be positive, but after all our research we think our guesses are pretty good. So let’s begin!
1. State of Grace
Who Is It About: Jake Gyllenhaal
Why: One of the lyrics in the song is “Up in your room and our slates are clean, Just twin fire signs, four blue eyes.” Jake and Taylor are both Sagittariuses, and they both have blue eyes. So this is obviously pointing right to Jake. In an interview with Perez Hilton, Swift said that this song was about the beginning of a relationship (her one with Jake we are going to assume).  Her hidden message in the album book about this song is “Love you doesn’t count after goodbye.” It sounds like Jake tried to called after the breakup and say he still loves her (but we will get to that in a few songs).
Who: Jake Gyllenhaal
The hidden message in the album book for this song is “Sag.” I tried to research if Taylor ever went with a boyfriend to the SAG Awards, but I couldn’t find anything, so I’m assuming this is referencing the Sagittarius sign (again). The Sagittarius sign is a fire sign, and red is the color of passion and fire, so I’m thinking this song is referencing their passionate relationship.
Who: Hard to say, but I’m going with John Mayer
To me, this song is about a relationship/person that is bad for you, but you can’t walk away because you like it too much. This song doesn’t give many specific clues, and the hidden message in the album book is “Won’t stop till it’s over.” Hmmm…so let’s think. This may be a reach, but I am going to say this is about John Mayer. One of the lyrics is “Out of focus eye to eye/Till the gravity is too much/And I’ll do anything you say/If you say it with your hands.” “Gravity” is a John Mayer song, and in “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” John Mayer sings “Your body is a wonderland/I’ll use my hands,” and while that song is obvi not about Taylor because he wrote it years and years ago, it is one of his most popular songs, and I think she may be referencing it.
4. I Knew You Were Trouble
Who: John Mayer
You guys, this is totally pointing to Mayer. He had a playboy reputation (which I think is unjust, but whatever) before dating Taylor, so she should have known what she was getting into (and I think she realizes that now). “A new notch in your belt is all I’ll ever be,” references his long list of Hollywood girlfriends. Another lyric is “And the saddest fear comes creeping in/That you never loved me or her or anyone or anything.” In John Mayer’s song “Half of My Heart,” which he recorded with Taylor Swift, one of the lyrics is, “And half of my heart is the part of a man who’s never truly loved anything.” Convinced?
5. All Too Well
Who: Jake Gyllenhaal
This song reminisces about a relationship, and about how once it was over, the guy mailed back all of her stuff but kept her scarf. Taylor and Jake dated in the winter months, and she was frequently photographed wearing scarves when they were together. She says, “Left my scarf there at your sister’s house/And you still got it in your drawer even now.” Jake has a sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal. She also says “You used to be a little kid with glasses,” and if any of you have seen adorable photos of Jake when he was young, you will know that he used to wear glasses.
And if you need more proof, the hidden message in the album book for this song is “Maple Lattes,” and they were photographed a lot getting coffee and an article on People.com from the time they were together mentions that Jake loved maple syrup in his coffee, and they frequently got maple lattes together.
Who: Her friends
This song is about being young with your friends. It isn’t about relationships, but she still says who the song is about/for in the album book. The hidden message is “Ashley Dianna Claire Selena.” Obviously two of those girls are Taylor’s friends Selena Gomez and Dianna Agron. Moving on.
