We thought we had Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth‘s relationship figured out. The other day, her Two and a Half Men co-star Angus T. Jones told a cute anecdote about how he was worried about Liam being angry that he got to kiss Miley: “She explained that he had just been involved in a scene where he basically had to pretend to have sex with this girl, so for her it was just like—it was her turn, more or less.” We took that to mean that Miley and Liam had a playful competition for who could get the raunchier sex scene. But now it sounds like we had it backwards.
Speaking on On Air with Ryan Seacrest yesterday, Miley explained that, like any Hollywood couple, they definitely experience jealousy when their jobs take them away from each other and have them stripping down with/kissing hot co-stars. That’s why, she said, her movie career hasn’t been as big as his—or even, we might infer from this quote, as big as she expected.
“It’s a thing, but it’s not a thing. At this point we’re engaged, like we’re forever. I think if I was a girlfriend and all this stuff would happen I would feel like I need to show my ownership. I’ve turned down scripts, because I felt like it was things that not only make me feel uncomfortable, but I don’t think any career is worth stressing out the person that you love the most or making them feel hurt. So, we both give each other boundaries.”
At first I thought this was really passive-aggressive, like she was blaming Liam for the fact that her new movie LOL averaged three viewers per screening. Ironically, she seemed to be on a good career trajectory in the movie that brought them together, the weepy Nicholas Sparks romance The Last Song. But then Liam got considered for blockbusters like Thor and actually cast in crazy-popular franchises like The Hunger Games. And Miley… bleached her hair blonde, chopped it all off, got engaged, and walked around without pants.
OK, the engagement part isn’t fair because Liam is also engaged. But do you see the difference? He’s jetting around to film sets while Miley doesn’t seem to be putting the same effort into work. Sure, she was decent on Two and a Half Men and certainly proved herself to not be a squeaky-clean Disney kid anymore. But becoming a movie star doesn’t seem to be a priority for her.
And honestly, we have to give her credit for that. Too often you hear about Hollywood couples who fail because both parties are at opposite ends of the country (or the world) and never see each other. Add the temptation of showmances with people you’re working with every day for months, and it’s no surprise that pairs of working actors haven’t hit upon a workable formula.
So Miley should own the fact that she chose to downplay her movie and TV career to give Liam his chance in the spotlight. It’s not like she’s some stay-at-home wife! For one, she already had an incredibly lucrative career thanks to Hannah Montana. Plus, she’s still got her music and all the other perks of a celebrity lifestyle. Just because she’s taking less in-your-face roles — in terms of sexuality or more professional kinds of exposure — doesn’t mean that she’ll fall off our radar anytime soon.
