Lady Gaga Mad At Die Antwoord For Killing Her In Their Video Even Though It’s The Least Offensive Part

Lady Gaga is currently butthurt over her portrayal in South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord‘s latest music video for their single “Fatty Boom Boom,” and not without reason. The video depicts her as a dumb tourist drag queen visiting South Africa who, among other things, has a discharge-covered shrimp removed from her vagina and gets eaten by a lion. What offense, you may ask, did she commit against them to deserve such treatment?

Duh, she asked them to open for her. HOW DARE SHE? Once upon a time, their label approached them about opening for Gaga, and they passed. By way of explanation, Ninja said: ”We like making pop music, but we like making hardcore music at the same time, mixing them, but they’ve got, like, soul. It’s not like weak, superficial shit. You know?”

One might think that would have been enough to put Gaga in her uncool, lamestream place, but Die Antwoord took it a step further with the aforementioned portrayal in their cuckoo-bananas new video (which even goes so far as to specifically mock her for wanting to take them on tour):

Demonstrating a fundamental misunderstanding of Die Antwoord, Gaga responded with the following:

1.) Lady Gaga’s massive mainstream success does not impress Die Antwoord. They care more about being “cool.”

2.) Showing a couple of trolls that they hurt your feelings is only going to make them want to do it more.

Die Antwoord responded in kind:

WHY ARE YOU HITTING YOURSELF? WHY ARE YOU HITTING YOURSELF?

I never thought I’d say this, but I’m kind of #teamgaga here. Sure, it was naive of her to think she could trade money and fame to the evil, 24/7, South African hipster version of Borat in exchange for some of their bizaro swag, but wasn’t it enough when they dissed her the first time? There was never any debate over who is cooler (sorry, I don’t make the rules), so this just feels like adding insult to injury.

That said, if I were a super-famous person, and I were going to tweet my objections to this video, I’d start with the blackface:

A rich white girl pretending to be a poor white girl pretending to be a racist representation of a black girl. Whoa, right? This stands out to me as a shining example of “hipster racism,” in that I’m pretty sure they did it purely because they knew it would make “PC people” mad. But that kind of (obnoxious) intent doesn’t magically make the imagery not-racist. Maybe I’m taking the bait, but it’s totally rational to be mad about blackface, as it was used as a tool of racist oppression in both America and South Africa for many, many years. You do not get to use whatever images you want under the guise of “art” if you don’t do anything coherent with them. Or rather, you “can” do whatever you want, but the end result will be a racist image, and that will make you an asshole.

Making matters even more frustrating, they did this in the same video that contained a fairly nuanced and successful parody of white tourists’ view of South Africa. The thing that pisses me off most about Die Antwoord is I know that they know the right answer, they just pretend not to because they think it makes them edgy and hip.

Jamie Peck seriously going to play the race card, see you have entitlement to your superficial opinion on kissing Lady Gaga’s ass but don’t try to rile up the Jesse Jackson community by pulling some insulting bullshit Yolandi, when you know nothing about her or her up bringing. What a shitty article.

  • anny

Idiot. its not about race. She is a Black Panther. The people who imply it is a race thing are the true racists. look at the eyes, the panther at the start of the vid… idiots

    • Johnny Page

A black panther? Her eyes are dollar signs…

  • Tomasci

Regardless of your feelings towards Gaga, what that band did was uncalled for.

  • matt

you took the bait, come to south africa, feel how tired we are of people always playing the race card to excuse their own insecurities and guilt. people are people black white fuck man get over it. or carry on doing what they expect you to do, in doing so proving your insignificant understanding of the status quo.

Its ridiculous to assume Die Antwoord and the rest of South Africa have the same racial hang ups as they do in the USA. How about Americans do some research on South Africa before assuming everyone in the world is as uptight as them.

  • Wes

Hi, South African here. There is no such thing as black face in South Africa. As experts in racism we definitely have other methods of displaying our hate for our black colleagues. Black face is a American creation, please don’t force your views on us. We already have enough American cultural imperialism. Don’t extend it to our racism.

The “discharge-covered shrimp” is in fact a king cricket and not seafood. Known as “Parktown prawns”, they are a common pest in the Johannesburg area.

She is also painted white in the video. Ninja is painted red. South Africa has been called the “Rainbow State.” There is no reason to indicate Yo-Landi was rich before Die Antwoord. She wears dollar sign contacts and a dress made of chewing gum wrappers. This all taken together seems to indicate it is more about color than skin color and the task of the viewer is to realize that.

  • Sigh

Calling Yolandi Visser is racist is assuming that every culture is like America’s and therefore assumes racism as soon as a white person is associated with the color black. This is false. Yolandi grew up in a very mixed-race country, and in the society she grew up in, this would not be considered racist. Some people need to learn that “social acceptability” varies throughout cultures.

very original article. fascinating. my favorite part was “You do not get to use whatever images you want under the guise of “art”. i’d love to hear more about The Rules of Art. maybe you could do that for your next piece.

care to comment on her use of “whiteface” in the video as well? what is she trying to say? have you got it all figured out? don’t feel obligated to actually analyze anything. we can leave it at “BLACKFACE? IM OFFENDED!!!!!!!!”

    • dan

i totally agree with you, they have this missunderstood thought and spreed it to everyone. Lady gaga dress with meet and when they made a joke she get mad? jesus

  • Freaky

You mainstream industry douches are tiring. There is no number team gaga. She doesn’t care about you lol. This controlled and contrived industry is crap. Releasing more satanic and perverse music aimed at teens and tweens but you need to pick up and run with bashing the group who separated from the mainstream. Why? Because you are bought and paid for mainstream trash puppets sign their lives away on the dotted line to produce crap to influence our youth.

  • Don’t Care

The f*** are any of you talking about? Both Lady Gaga and Die Antwoord suck. That video I just watched by Die Ant. was one of the most horrible pieces of crap. Cool? Not even close. Lady Gaga’s Alejandro was also a major waste of production money, given the song wasn’t even hers. Anyone old enough knows that. THEY BOTH SUCK, YOU’RE ALL IDIOTS.

Jamie Peck, sounds to me like your the racist. Everybody in the world dont think like you or think like Americans. Actually we south africans arent racists. we dont see racism behind every tree or bush here. And we deffinately DO NOT look at life the way Americans do. And I am so grateful for that.

The fact that you got so pissed off about Die Antwoord makes me like them even more thanI already do. Your unbiased-yet,incredibly-opinionated article does not hold merit and you should quit journalism altogether. I didn’t see any racism in that. I was vastly intrigued and entertained by it. I am sure you can find much more racism in so many other music videos dating back to the 80′s and it will have more merit than that.

  • CWAMP

Jamie Peck, I hope you didn’t get a check for this dribble. Who gives a WHAT about anything to do with Gaga. She’s a toad. Who gives a WHAT about their stupid opinions? Let them do what they do and let all the rest enjoy their productions. Stop trying to read too much into any of it. Ferking pretentious gonad.

  • dan

O please they are not fokken racist u dump shit. If you watch the making of of this video, is just amazing how they trat people around them and let them interact and btw They ARE africans. Shut your mouth lady gaga shouldn’t be so mad. I like her either, she is so full of love and stuff but is a music video. Its a parody of her, She dress up with meet and don’t want to be mocked??? If you want to be all crazy handle the facts damn
