Fans (myself included) were upset when Sony Pictures released the first photos of the Carrie remake, because we saw the “money shot” of Chloe Moretz terrified and drenched in pig’s blood way too soon. How could the rest of the movie live up to the most iconic image? Well, an interesting thing happened to maybe sway my annoyance into respect: The teaser trailer came out.
It’s only 15 seconds long, but it certainly sets the scene. We pan over the town of Chamberlain, Maine, where the school gym is on fire… as are the surrounding buildings… and the streets… and the homes. We’re talking total devastation, not just for the teenagers who threw tampons at poor, shy Carrie, but at every person in Chamberlain who never helped her or who enabled her crazy mother Margaret (Julianne Moore) to abuse her.
And that last shot:
Chilling! Whereas in the publicity still from EW Chloe looked confused and mortified by her scary telekinesis, in this brief shot it’s undeniable that Carrie is reveling in her power. After being told by her mother that she’s evil, she actually gets to be, enacting revenge on everyone who ever took advantage of her. It says a lot about Chloe’s acting ability that just a glimpse of her panting and drenched in pig’s blood, and I completely buy her as a teenage telekinetic who had a really shitty prom.
Am I crazy? Is 15 seconds too little time to attach myself to this remake? Sound off in the comments!
