Last season’s finale of The Vampire Diaries left fans with a lot to process. It seemed to be non-stop action from beginning to end.
So on last night’s season premiere they had a lot of questions to answer. Was Stefan (Paul Wesley) really unable to save Elena (Nina Dobrev)? Is she going to become a vampire now? And of course which vampire is Elena going to choose: kind-hearted Stefan or his more dangerous older brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder)?
I was unsurprised to see that in fact Stefan had honored Elena’s wishes to save her ex-boyfriend/longtime friend Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) before saving her from the car accident we saw last season. Elena is caring and compassionate, almost to a fault. She never would have been able to live with herself knowing her life was saved at the cost of her dear friend’s. Lucky for her Stefan knew this.
Unlucky for her, Stefan wasn’t able to save her. But never fear dear, Elena died with vampire blood in her system and we all know what that means. She’s coming back to life as a vampire. (Seriously did anyone think the main character was going to get killed off? Doubt it.) I wasn’t really surprised by this turn of events since I figured it was bound to happen eventually and they set it up so well last season.
I was however a little bit thrown by the fact that a lot of this episode revolved around whether or not Elena’s bff, Bonnie Bennett (Katerina Graham), would be able to use her witchcraft to make Elena human again. But alas, her efforts proved unsuccessful. The magic was simply too dark for Bonnie to perform. So it looks like Elena will have to get used to living life as a vampire because it seems that change is going to be permanent. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to see this change in her character. She’s now become a vampire who by nature are manipulative, devious, and self-serving all of which are qualities Elena doesn’t possess. I think this storyline is just what the show needs to add some more excitement to its fourth season.
Now speaking of excitement, that’s what I was feeling when I found out that Elena was going to be making a choice between the Salvatore brothers. And all of that excitement quickly went away when she revealed her choice was Stefan. I can’t say that I was shocked, but really? They’re soooooo boring together. I’m not a fan of their relationship, and will keep my fingers crossed that it falls apart again. Which will be the perfect time for Damon to sweep in and make his move…again.
