The Canyons is all about sex: It stars adult performer James Deen, and the one amusing anecdote from the set is when Lindsay Lohan forced the male crew members to strip down to their skivvies before she would bare her boobs for a sex scene. And since it’s written by Bret Easton Ellis, you know that all the sexual tension is laced with paranoia and manipulation. In fact, here’s the official synopsis:
It’s not The Hills… THE CANYONS is a contemporary L.A. noir from director Paul Schrader, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and producer Braxton Pope about the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition, both personally and professionally, among a group of young people in their 20′s and how one chance meeting connected to the past unravels all of their lives, resulting in deceit, paranoia, cruel mind games and ultimately violence.
So I guess it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that the first teaser trailer mocks propaganda exploitation films like Reefer Madness, what with the capital letters proclaiming things like WHERE THE SEX IS AS CHEAP AS THE BUDGET… AND THE ONLY WAY OUT IS DEATH! Still, you get to see a lot more footage than last time, including LiLo’s overly-puffy face looking surprised and James stripping down for some fun.
As the producers explained, because The Canyons is largely funded by a Kickstarter campaign, they couldn’t do anything too involved, so they whipped together this teaser. I’ll be curious to see if the movie is equally a parody, or if they were just dicking around for promotional purposes.
You know what else cements our belief that this movie is just gonna be really weird? The latest update on the official Facebook page — unclear if it’s from the producers or BEE himself — detailing Lindsay’s reaction:
Showed LL the film tonight. She saw and she understood. What a wonderful moment for her. Some tears, some hard words, some kisses but that’s life in Lindsayland. Sometimes the movie gods smile. Sometimes you get lucky. LL and I got lucky.
Really, is this supposed to be uber-serious or more of a fun romp?
