Forget Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey—here’s a much more delightful TV personality smackdown.
We love Anderson Cooper when he gets the giggles while interviewing reality TV stars. We love him when he comes out of the closet with a wonderfully eloquent letter. But it could be that we most love Anderson when he calls out other people on their bullshit.
When Anderson came out in July, his announcement was mostly welcomed by people glad to see another out celebrity. But former The View co-host Star Jones had a more cynical perspective on the matter, accusing Anderson of doing it just to rake in ratings for his talk show Anderson Live. This morning on his show, his guest — and friend of 20 years — Andy Cohen asked Anderson just what he thought about the backlash to his coming out, and Anderson finally responded to Star’s comment.
The whole thing is worth watching (below), but I love how he clearly states that his announcement — in a letter to his friend at The Daily Beast — didn’t benefit Anderson Live in any way. ”If I was wanting to boost ratings,” he says, “I would have waited to announce it on ‘A Very Special Episode’ that would have been promo’d for weeks and weeks and there would have been commercials … ‘Anderson’s Huge Announcement.’
“As memory serves, in terms of boosting ratings, I seem to recall [Star] hocking her wedding every single day to get free products when she was on The View,” he says. Then things get even more real: “And I seem to recall her lying about her gastric bypass surgery and making everybody else lie about it as well. So for her to suddenly emerge out of the shadows and suddenly attack me for this, I couldn’t believe it.”
Yes. I love how outlets are reporting that Anderson “flipped out” when he stays so calm talking. You have to admire someone who keeps his cool even while he’s obviously frustrated.
Star has already responded to the segment, tweeting,
I was wrong. @andersoncooper didn’t come out as a ratings ploy. He used ME talking about him coming out @todayshow as a ratings ploy. #mybad
OK, now this is getting really meta. I guess she has some point there, but really this sounds more like a semi-clever comeback she couldn’t resist tweeting. I’d like to argue that we’d give Anderson all these ratings and pageviews just because he’s so awesome anyway.
