“It’s October 3rd.”
Such are the famous words that Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) utters to Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett) as she’s trying to woo him in Mean Girls. October 3rd has also become known as Mean Girls Quotes Day, which is not surprising since we Millennials revere this movie as infinitely rewatchable and so authentic to our own high school experiences.
Now, I could give you a list of all the great quotes from Cady’s narration, or Janice’s (Lizzy Caplan) zingers, or the Plastics’ unfathomable rules of Girl World. But other sites are doing that, or chances are you’ve already seen those all over Tumblr and your Facebook newsfeed. It just so happens that I’ve been working on a “Then and Now” gallery of all of Mean Girls‘ minor characters—the various cliques caught up in Cady and Regina’s turf war. Because of course we have to know what happened to the Crying Girl, Trang Pak, and Glenn Coco!
Crying Girl – Jill Morrison

NOW

This whole post started because one of the girls in Pitch Perfect looked enough like the infamous Crying Girl that I just had to track her down. No, Jill Morrison didn’t sing a capella with Anna Kendrick and co, but since 2004 she’s been working steadily in a slew of TV movies and shows you probably haven’t seen. Still, you can tell that her star rises as she goes from titles like Love Sick: Secrets of a Sex Addict and The Secret Lives of Second Wives to The L Word, Fringe, and Psych. Hell, she’s almost unrecognizable from the misfit we love to quote!

NOW

Miranda Edwards seems to have gone the fate of her Mean Girls character and continues to be overlooked; she hasn’t done much since the movie, though she did have a bit part in the 2006 TV movie Why I Wore Lipstick To My Mastectomy starring Sarah Chalke. Although her fortune could be changing, since her Covert Affairs character from a 2010 arc just reappeared on the show. However, on Tumblr she’s overshadowed by a different Miranda Edwards, some sort of goth/punk cosplayer. Ah, well.

Nothing much to report for either girl, though at least Ky Pham has a headshot!

Shane Oman – Diego Klattenhoff

NOW

OK, now we’re finally getting somewhere! Diego Klattenhoff seems to be the hardest-working actor of this bunch: After playing Shane Oman, he popped up in early-’00s crime series like 1-800-MISSING and Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye. After a small part in the big-screen Lucky Number Slevin, he returned on TV for guest stints on shows that other Mean Girls alums have frequented: Psych, Supernatural, etc. But it was 2009 where he started to get consistent character arcs on series like 24, Mercy, and now Homeland. Considering that the latter just swept the Emmys, I’m not surprised that Diego has two big projects lined up for 2013: Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro‘s alien invasion pic about humans using giant robots to fight off invaders; and a starring role in the romantic drama Kilimanjaro.

Even though I’m convinced that I’ve seen Julia Chantrey in a couple of shows, her biggest role since Mean Girls was as a Casting Assistant in 2009′s Degrassi Goes Hollywood. And no, it wasn’t anything ironic. Too bad that she has to pay her dues and doesn’t seem to get recognized for having one of the movie’s most memorable lines.

Glenn Coco – David Reale

NOW

Despite not even being credited in Mean Girls, David Reale has embodied one of the 2000s’ most beloved characters. Not that it’s skyrocketed him to fame or anything; since then he’s had small roles on Suits and Nikita, but not much else. Though he was part of the MTV remake of Skins, it got cancelled after just a few episodes. Still, David — whose face we hardly saw in the movie but is rather cute — has a healthy Twitter following for someone who’s not really famous, and has a good laugh about the “Coco Nation” (Glenn Coco fandom) being alive and well.
