As we’re nearing the end of 2012, it’s becoming clear that Ted is the best decision that Seth MacFarlane ever made. It’s completely revitalized his career and made him relevant again! First he got to be a presenter at the Emmys last week despite Family Guy not getting nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. Then we found out he’s dating Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke. And now comes the wholly unexpected news that he’s hosting the Academy Awards!
It’s a bold move for the Academy of Arts and Sciences, but perhaps necessary since neither the hot young stars (James Franco and Anne Hathaway) nor the old standby (Billy Crystal) have made for a good show the last few years. MacFarlane has had over a decade of experience skewering pop culture with Family Guy, and his well-received gig hosting Saturday Night Live the other week seems to have been his audition for Oscar.
Instead of arrogantly boasting about the news, MacFarlane seems nearly as surprised as we were. “It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars,” he said in a statement. “My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast.”
Then he went and tweeted out this cute video of him telling his dad his big news.
Aww, now I’m really excited for him! Of course, I would expect nothing less than him to whip out some Peter, Stewie, and Brian Griffin voices for the telecast. We don’t need any of that awkward animation they did the year that the cartoons appeared on the Emmys and Bones—just MacFarlane doing all three voices at the mic.
OK, and Ted should make a cameo too. It’s only fair.
