In news that will shock everyone, producers looking to make yet another movie about Jackie O aren’t casting real-life wannabe Kennedy Taylor Swift, but instead are looking to someone with a bit more film experience. Deadline reports that Fox Searchlight wants to bring back their Black Swan star Natalie Portman to play the iconic first lady in Jackie, a drama about Jackie Kennedy’s life immediately following JFK’s assassination.
In an ideal world, Fox Searchlight would also bring back Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky, especially since he was originally attached to this project. The only problem is, he had intended to make it with his then-partner Rachel Weisz. After they split, both left the project hanging with neither director nor star. It’s unclear if he’d be willing to return for Natalie; similarly, she likes the script but wants to make sure they hire a director she likes.
With her outspoken support for Barack Obama, Natalie is obviously no stranger to politics. I’d really like to see her tackle Jackie Kennedy in a movie where her famous husband exists only in flashbacks; I feel like far too often we see her shuffled off and regarded only as the loyal wife who was cheated on. But more than anything else, I’d like to have a portrayal of Jackie O to replace Katie Holmes‘ awful accent from last year’s miniseries The Kennedys.
Because if Natalie could make us take seriously an obsessive-compulsive ballerina who imagines ghastly creatures and lesbian romances, then she could pull off a portrayal of the First Lady that’s not overdramatic or over-enunciated. Plus, she’ll look amazing in those costumes.
